Beast Crawl is Uptown Oakland’s first annual literary “pub” crawl, a free festival featuring more than 150 poets, writers and performance artists in a single night, spread out over three hours and 25 local galleries, bars, restaurants, cafés, and storefronts, including Telegraph Beer Garden, Awaken Café, Vessel Gallery, Farley’s East, Era Art Bar & Lounge, InkWell Tattoo, Club Paradiso, Café RandeVu, The Noble Cafe, The Punchdown, The Layover, Xolo, Giant Burger, Café Van Kleef, Feelmore510, Disco Volante, The Den at the Fox, and many more.

To curate more than two dozen readings for Beast Crawl, we invited a diverse collection of local reading series producers and literary rock stars, including Lip Service West, Tourettes Without Regrets, Literary Death Match, Saturday Night Special, Quiet Lightning, East Bay on the Brain, Anger Management, Lyrics & Dirges, Rad Dad, Kelsey Street Press, and Small Press Distribution, among others.

For the name “Beast Crawl” we combined the classic Oakland image of the giant cranes that stalk our shore, and East Bay, the pig Latin for Beast. We think every city should have its own literary crawl, and Beast Crawl is just what Oakland needs to launch its own unique literary identity.
