Bassam will be joined by April Centrone, a member of the New York Arabic Orchestra, as well as other local musicians. Don't miss your chance to listen to Arabic music at its best!About the Musicians:
Bassam Saba is one of the nation's leading figures of Arabic music. Saba is a world-renowned nay virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist, performing on oud, violin, buzuq, saz and western classical flute. He has worked extensively with the biggest stars of the world: Fairouz (the diva of Lebanon) Marcel Khalife, Ziad Rahbani, Simon Shaheen, Wadi El-Safi, Paul Simon, Alicia Keys, Sting, Santana, Yo-Yo Ma and Herbie Hancock. Saba directs the prestigious 30-member New York Arabic Orchestra, which has enjoyed sold-out performances in some of New York's greatest venues since its inception in 2007. The NYAO's trademark lies in the performance of Saba's original compositions and fine-tuned traditional works, and and in bringing Arabic music education into the NY public school system and universities across the country. As one of the most sought-after teachers of Arabic music, Saba has led numerous Arabic workshops, lectures, orchestras and ensembles worldwide.
April Centrone is one of the leading classical Arabic percussionists in America. Centrone plays riqq (Arabic tambourine), frame drum, oud and violin, and is also a proficient jazz/rock drummer of 15 years. Centrone has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Town Hall; lectured at numerous museums, cultural centers and universities around the country, such as Berklee, Columbia and Bucknell; directed and composed the music for plays; and has toured throughout Italy, Spain, Greece, America and New Zealand. Centrone has performed with artists such as Marcel Khalife, Daniel Schnyder with Kristian Jarvi's Absolute Ensemble, Bassam Saba, Najib Shaheen and Samir Chatterjee. Centrone has also performed as a soloist with the East Oakland Bay Symphony for the premiere of Nolan Gasser's "World Concerto." In 2007, Centrone co-founded the prestigious New York Arabic Orchestra with famed conductor Bassam Saba, and continues to manage and perform with the orchestra to this day.
