Description

Bradford Cox assumes the stage, a frail figure amidst the swirling smoke and colored lights. As the crowd stands silently, waiting for the inevitable intro, a chord is struck and a roar is heard. This roar begins as a whimper building to a deafening crescendo from the frontman for both Deerhunter and the increasingly popular solo project Atlas Sound. As Atlas Sound, Cox builds the crescendo before breaking it into smaller bits that comprise songs of an almost new and exciting form of indie pop music.

Atlas Sound is attempting, and seeming to succeed, at treading the fine line between experimentalism, psychedelia, and electronic pop. From the simplicity and catchy rhythm of “Walkabout” (with Noah Lennox of Animal Collective), to the slow but powerful “Small Horror,” Cox is attempting to change the standard definition of pop music. And with Atlas Sound he is not only doing it, but doing it at the speed of thought.

Most of Atlas Sound’s songs are written, recorded, and produced within hours--the lyrics never written down, but rather recorded as they become thought. This improvisation enables the sound to continually stay fresh and honest, at times missing the album entirely and appearing on Cox's blog--a place where one can download new songs on an almost daily basis, or read the brutally honest and self-depreciating thoughts of Mr. Cox as he pours out his soul on digital parchment. These things and more add up to equal the delightful sounds and powerful music that Atlas Sound is becoming known for. Even as the lights go up upon the stage, one is left wanting more and more of what Atlas Sound is continuing to deliver.
