Description

Ashling with Melanie O'Reilly will be sharing their musical roots at the Berkeley World Music Festival in an all-traditional Irish program with Gaelic song. Born in Dublin, Ireland to a family of storytellers and performers, Melanie had the opportunity to learn first hand the music, arts and culture of Ireland. About Gaelic, she says that “Gaelic is such an old language, such a musical language”. When Melanie sings the ancient Gaelic folk tradition of “lilting’ (singing without words,) the effect is spellbinding.

The spirit and soul of Ireland remains an integral part of Melanie’s innovative music. Since Melanie was introduced to jazz at age 11, she has pioneered a unique style of her own, melding Irish folk music and original compositions with Jazz.

The Bay Area band “Ashling”, a versatile band in several music genres, displays a dynamic sound of acoustic Irish trad, a mixture of high-energy instrumentals with soaring vocals, and imaginative arrangements. For the Berkeley World Music Festival, Melanie (vocals) and Sean O Nuallain (guitar) will be joined by Corwin Zeckley (fiddle), Surya Prakasha (percussion) and special guest, Irish-dancer Rebecca Cison.
