Description
Jon Parr is an all-natural, sustainable farmer in Santa Cruz, CA, and owner of Fishnet Aquaponics. With a background in construction and contracting, farming is a second career for Jon, following a first love. Jon has over 20 years in the building trades, and 3 years supplying live fish fingerlings to other Aquaponics enthusiasts. Fishnet Aquaponics is now building the first 8,000 sq. ft. of commercial greenhouses for production of leafy greens, edible fish, and hops. What will be taught? Aquaponics is a method of farming that combines the culture of fish and plants together, in a closed loop, symbiotic relationship. More plants can be grown in less space, using less water, and they are grown faster than conventional dirt farming. Nothing enters the garden other than light, air, water, and fish food. Nothing leaves the garden other than produce, and edible fish. Pests are hardly even a nuisance, because many garden pests require soil in their life cycle, and soil is absent in Aquaponics. The remaining pests are easily kept in check by planting beneficial plants that draw to the area nature's pest predators.
Saturday morning will be lecture with Q&A. Then we will tour the ELSEE gardens facility and examine two working aquaponics systems with more questions and answers. Knowledge is free for the taking, so come prepared with questions.
The Workshop fee is $30. For members of the California Native Garden Foundation (CNGF), the cost is $25. (Join CNGF at the workshop for $38 and save $10 on this class and 30% on workshops all year!)
Parking is available on Race Street, side streets, St. Leo's parking lot, and in the Food Basket parking lot on Garland.
