Description
This superlative English-language adaptation of a Chekhov story is beautifully realized by the Soviet-Georgia-born Israeli director Dover Koshashvili (Late Marriage) and an exacting cast of Irish and British actors. Laevsky (Andrew Scott) has run away to a sun-drenched Black Sea resort with his married mistress Nadya (Fiona Glascott), but he has allowed his love for her to dissipate along with his honor, in idle bouts of drinking and gambling. Learning that Nadya's husband has died, and fearing that he'll now be expected to marry her, Laevsky voices his desire to flee, but is overheard by visiting zoologist Von Koren (Tobias Menzies), a scientist who cultivates a particular loathing for what he sees as a pitiful specimen of the human race. This psychological triangle around human nature develops and combusts against nature itself, exquisitely photographed by Paul Sarossy, in a "Chekhovian" drama worthy of the name. Writer: Mary Bing. Producers: Donald Rosenfeld, Mary Bing. Director: Dover Koshashvili. (US 2010) 95 min.More Info
