The Bay Area is a good place to be an organist. Between movie palaces like The Castro, The Grand Lak and The Stanford Theatre, innumerable cathedrals and churches, and oddball sites like The Legion of Honor, there are a lot of organs to take advantage of. And when you make a living in a niche market like organ performance, chances are you'll have played most of them.As the organist at St. Mark's in Palo Alto, James Welch puts on an annual holiday concert of jazzed-up classical music. Entitled "Bach: And All That Jazz", Welch fires up St. Mark's organ every December 31st for an evening of classical tunes infused with jazz rhythms.
