January 16 marks the opening of three new exhibitions at Sanchez Art Center that will remain on view through February 15. Story of the Defeated, with Angela Pryor’s beautiful, intense, and moving paintings concerning the disappeared victims of repression in Argentina, will grace the Main Gallery. The Art Guild of Pacifica presents a group show, Love and Loss, in the West Gallery, and the East Gallery features Fog Fest Invitational showing work by award winners and judges from the 2014 Fog Fest Photo Contest. The opening reception for all three shows will be held on Friday, January 16 from 7 to 9 pm, with piano music by Alex Balmaceda, refreshments, free parking, and a wonderful evening of art.

Angela Pryor’s deeply touching paintings, with their unique and haunting beauty, encourage us to acknowledge the existence and then the loss of victims of repression in Argentina (and other countries), the defeated ones who cannot speak for themselves and whose disappearance left no witnesses to speak for them. To this end Pryor chose the image of Betina Tarnopolsky, who at 15 years of age was taken from her grandmother’s house in the middle of the night, never to be seen again. Her parents and one brother and his wife also were “disappeared.” Of this family, only one brother, Daniel, survives today. Pryor’s work draws on iconic images that are instantly recognizable, such as Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, the Mona Lisa by da Vinci, and Frida Kahlo’s Little Deer. But the familiar faces have transformed into Betina’s face. We feel safe with the familiar historical artworks, but at the same time deeply unsettled by the juxtaposition of an image of a clearly victimized young girl. In Pryor’s works, safety and danger collide, causing us to reassess our world—to realize that these things happened and we cannot afford to forget or look the other way.

Pryor has studied and exhibited in both Argentina and the U.S., earning an MFA from the SF Art Institute. She teaches at Summerfield Waldorf School in Santa Rosa. The artist will talk about her work on Sunday, January 25, at 2 pm. This is a free event and is part of Sanchez Art Center’s ongoing Artist’s Talk series. Love and Loss, the Art Guild of Pacifica’s group show in West Gallery, could not be better themed to be in the gallery adjacent to the Angela Pryor exhibit. Synchronicity does indeed live! In this show, Art Guild members share their experiences and perspectives on love and loss filtered through the lens of each artist’s unique creative vision.

The Fog Fest Invitational in the East Gallery includes award winners from the 2014 Fog Fest Photo Contest as well as the two contest judges. Alan Grinberg and Edwin Hacking both won numerous awards in this annual contest before stepping up to serve as judges, a duty they have discharged for two years now with great care, thoughtfulness, and artistic acumen. Participants in the Invitational are not limited to any theme or size restriction, so expect to see more and different photographic works than were in the Fog Fest contest.

Opening night is Friday, January 16, 7–9 pm; thereafter the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, through Sunday, February 15.
