Meklit is an Ethio-American singer-songwriter, composer and TED Senior Fellow. Her new album, "When the People Move, The Music Moves Too," gets its wings this June on Six Degrees Records. Come celebrate at the Rickshaw Stop with a bumping set of Ethio-Jazz for 2017. This is pentatonic music, as Oakland as it is Addis Ababa, immigrant music and American music all at the same time.

The songs came straight from the push of a legend.... Back in 2011, in a late night conversation after he saw her concert Mulatu Astatke - the Godfather of Ethio-Jazz - sat Meklit down and said, "What are you going to do to contribute to Ethio-Jazz? You must keep innovating!" Meklit responded with this body of songs soaked with her Ethiopian-American identity, laid on a foundation of East African groove, and jeweled with a story of finding beloved home inside of two cultures.

Oakland based shapeshifter and all around creative visionary Zakiya Harris opens.

Zakiya Harris is a Shapeshifter. She is an afro-eclectic mix of soul, dance and theater. Her music has been compared to the works of Janelle Monáe, Erykah Badu and MIA. Along with her dynamic band Elephantine she seamlessly blends the genres of Soul, Electronica, Hip-Hop and Afro-Beat music within her repertoire.
Zakiya has shared stages with Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Digable Planets, Gil Scott-Heron, and Tatiana Ali. She’s also been featured at Art Basel, The Independent, Fillmore Jazz Festival, Life is Living, The New Parish, Brick and Mortar, Cafe Du Nord and The Legendary CBGB’s Gallery.
