Description

Cooper continues to probe the psychology of noir through her portraits of Hollywood screen actresses of the 1920s through 1970s. Taken from film stills, the faces of icons such as Greta Garbo, Farah Fawcett, and Anne Bancroft are uniquely rendered in Cooper’s unassuming but powerfully wielded gouache paints. Cooper captures the isolation that comes before disappearance, and the loss of human interest in something that was once so prized.

A concurrent exhibition of new lightboxes from Los Angeles-based Elise Irving in the gallery’s back area. Irving received her MFA in photography from the California College of the Arts in 2006, and has exhibited throughout California, including at the San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Mills College Art Museum, and Aftermodern Gallery.
