Description
The exhibition runs from January 17 to February 16, with an opening reception on Saturday, January 19, from 5 -8 pm.When we first opened the program at 49 Geary, I adopted the habit of tracking each exhibition with its consecutive number. We left in April after #26 to reset the clock with LA01 (now up to #16). Now we return to San Francisco with Alan Ebnother opening the new Sutter Street space, and pick up where we left off with SF27.
This is our third solo with San Francisco-born Ebnother, who lives and works in the German town of Nordhausen, about half way between Kassel and Leipzig. He also maintains a studio outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although he has worked predominately as an independent, Ebnother has long been associated with an international diaspora of monochrome practitioners, comprised of a wide array of painters such as Joseph Marioni, Marcia Hafif, Phil Sims, James Hayward, Anne Appleby, David Simpson, Gunter Umberg, Dieter Villinger and the late Rudolf de Crignis and John Meyer, amongst others. Ebnother began his career as a professional ballet dancer and much of the critical vocabulary of that discipline is applicable to his painting: extension, elevation, arabesque, balance and surprise. His painting is distinguished by a highly intuitive and robust approach to marking, and an absorbent surface that seems to draw in as much color as it radiates. This is "just painting" the way shikantaza of Zen is "just sitting", the end in itself.
