Description

Ajanta in Berkeley, in celebration of the restaurant's 20th anniversary, will offer all dinner guests on the nights of June 9, 10 and 11 a free glass of wine, sparkling wine, beer, or a soft drink.

This milestone anniversary coincides with restaurant's achieving historically high customer approval as evidenced by a 2013 Zagat Survey food rating of 27 (out of 30) and, for the fifth year in a row, being voted "Best Indian" in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, Ajanta is ranked the fourth best dining spot in Berkeley, just a point behind Chez Panisse.

Unchanged is a focus on food prepared with seasonally fresh and mostly organic vegetables, organic chicken, hormone and antibiotic-free meats, and natural seafood, all mostly locally sourced from a network of suppliers who utilize sustainable practices. Not to be missed are various signature dishes prepared using the restaurant’s tandoor oven, plus Ajanta’s house made breads including naan, chapati, paratha and poori.

Among the libations available at Ajanta are an international selection of varietal wines, a number of which are from India, plus domestic and imported beers, specialty teas and lassi.

The Ajanta dining room features design components and artwork inspired by Ajanta caves, a World Heritage Site located in the central Indian state of Maharashtra. Highlights include light box fixtures with translucent shades showcasing photo-images from the caves, paintings depicting cave wall artwork, colorfully decorated columns, oversized framed mirrors, and an olive/earth tone color scheme.

Chef/owner Lachu Moorjani opened Ajanta in 1993 to media and customer acclaim which has continued to this day. Ajanta has been favorably reviewed by virtually every relevant publication that serves the area and has been voted the Best Indian Restaurant not only in the Zagat Guide (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) but also in the SF Baylist (2010, 2011). The restaurant is Michelin recommended and has been identified as one of Alice Water’s favorite places to dine. The 2005 publication of the Ajanta, Regional Feasts of India cookbook was complemented by the Shanti’s Spice Box, created by Moorjani’s wife Shanti, which contains pre-portioned packets of 30 spices that perfectly pair with the recipes found in the book. Both items receive 5-star reviews on Amazon and are available for purchase at the restaurant or on http://www.Amazon.com.
