Description

This is an exhibition of work by New York City-based photographer Andrea Camuto of Afghan refugees who have returned to their homeland after years in exile.

Camuto made the first in a series of trips to Afghanistan in 2005, where she began photographing refugees living in the war-ravaged remains of former Russian government buildings in Kabul. By 2007, 4.8 million Afghan refugees had returned home, most from Pakistan and Iran.

What Camuto has seen during her trips to Afghanistan, the most recent in February 2009, is that most returning refugees cannot afford the high rents of Kabul, so they settle where they can, hoping to find work that often never materializes. With each successive trip, Camuto has been able to deepen her ties with the families and further her understanding of the political and social complexities of Afghan culture.
