A Survey of Works: 1947 to the Present

ArtZone 461 presents a second solo show in the side gallery featuring a survey of works (1947 to present) by historic Bay Area artist José Ramón Lerma. He is among the important artists whose careers are most associated with the San Francisco school of Abstract-Expressionism.

José Ramón Lerma studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, 1949 – 1951 and the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, 1954 – 1958. Early on he was influenced by the ‘Mexican School’ – as were many of his post WWII colleagues. Lerma’s style evolved following exposure to the teachers and students of abstract expressionism and nearly his entire body of work embraces it and pays homage to dada and surrealism.

In addition to painting Lerma has done assemblage, collage, constructions, drawings and made prints. His work has been in several gallery and museum shows since 1955.
