Description
Award-winning choreographer MargaretWingrove embarks on her fourth decade of blending modern dance and ballet techniques with high energy and physicality at the Margaret Wingrove Dance Company. Recipient of The Metro’s Best of Silicon Valley 2010 for Most Inspired Modern Dance Company, the company has performed a wide range of work, including recent interpretations of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, Bo Caldwell’s The Distant Land of My Father and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.
A Passion for Dance includes three premieres: Awakening set to Variations on the Kanon by Pachelbel by George Winston, The Ultimate Seduction, music by John Cage and I am… a collaboration with students at Yerba Buena High School in Downtown San Jose.
In a bold experimentation, Wingrove is co-choreographing I am… along side the students. It will be performed in two parts: Caring and Compassionate and Colorful and Confident. Wingrove says she has been working feverishly to harness the dance students’ energy into this innovative program. Rather than just perform their work at the high school, she decided to give these teens, most of whom are from an underserved community, the experience of working within an established company and performing on a professional stage. Wingrove says she has “enjoyed giving these students the opportunity to learn not only dance technique, but how to create using their own voice.” I Am… is set to the music of Cirque de Soleil.
