Join us for an elegant assembly ball set in the world of Jane Austen. Set at the Bath Assembly Rooms and inspired by Jane Austen's Bath novels, our assembly includes a full evening of Regency dancing, cards, and a very pleasant light buffet.

Bangers and Mash, capital in their country dances, will play English country dances popular in the time of Jane Austen as well as some earlier country dance classics and a number of exquisite early 19th waltzes and waltz country dances. All country dances will be briefly taught and called. And, of course, we will dance such favourites as the Congress of Vienna Waltz, Mr. Darcy's Fancy, the Duke of Kent's Waltz, and Sir Roger de Coverley.

Don't know a hey for four from an allemande? Never fear! From 7 to 8pm there will be a pre-ball workshop in Regency country dance with Mr. Alan Winston of the Bay Area English Country Dance Society. Partners are not required, either for the dance class or the ball and we will be happy to make introductions.

Early 19th century costume (1800 - 1820) is admired, but not required, and modern evening dress is a perfectly acceptable alternative to period costume.

As always at PEERS, role-playing is very welcome. The PEERS Flying CirCUS performers will be re-creating characters from Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, but if there is a historical character or a character from Jane Austen's other novels that you would enjoy playing, please let us know by emailing [email protected] (to avoid duplication!). This should be a character who could feasibly be in Bath in 1814 (so Napoleon is right out!).

Like any proper assembly ball, the Ball at the Crown will include card tables, and instruction in both Whist and the popular round game of Speculation will be provided. There will also be a musical entertainment at intermission with some of our most distinguished local artists, with narration by Miss Anne Elliot.

Punch and a light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening (as usual, potluck finger food contributions to the kitchen will be greatly appreciated).

To order advance tickets to the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online via PayPal, please go to the ball website at http://www.peers.org/janeausten.html and click on the PayPal icon for directions. The deadline for purchasing advance tickets is February 23. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 each.
