Description
Inspired by the stories of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is classic farce meets vaudeville, slapstick comedy all mixed up with satirical humor about romantic love and social class. The show tells the bawdy story of a servant named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. One of the funniest musicals ever written, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is witty and irreverent, full of situations and humor people have been laughing at for thousands of years. The music and lyrics, starting with the rousing "Comedy Tonight," were written by a young Stephen Sondheim. The leading role of Pseudolus is one of the great comic parts in American Musical Theatre. In fact, every actor who has opened in the role of Pseudolus on Broadway (Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers and Nathan Lane) won a Best Actor Tony Award for their performance. In the Woodminster production, the show-stopping role will be played by Trente Morant, an actor who has performed locally at theaters including ACLO, Theatre Rhino, California Conservatory Theater, Oakland Ballet, and Oakland East Bay Symphony. He is also a conductor, arranger, and musical director.
Come early and enjoy a picnic, a walk in Joaquin Miller Park, and the beautiful bay views with your family. As the sun sets, take your seats in the outdoor theater and enjoy an evening of music and magic under the stars.
Tickets are $27-$56, with $2 discounts for seniors and children. Groups of 25 or more can purchase blocks of tickets for half price. Our “Kids Come Free” program offers free tickets to kids who attend with paying adults. (Free children's tickets are available the night of the performance only -- visit http://www.woodminster.com/Webpages/Ticketbuying/kidscomefree.html to find out the best way to use this program.)
A note to parents: This show contains sexual situations and bawdy humor, though nothing more graphic than is commonly seen on prime-time network television. The show won a Best Musical Tony Award in 1963, and was made into a popular movie in 1966. It is based on the stories of ancient Roman playwright Plautus.
