Journey back 100 years to 1909 and the continuing development of motion pictures, in this fascinating program of short films with live piano accompaniment, organized and presented by Randy Haberkamp, Director of Educational Programs for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.In 1909 the "Stars Are Born," with the public's earliest recognition of screen actors (and expressing preferences among them), which would force film distributors to actually identify the players on screen and would eventually evolve into the "star system" of motion picture advertising.
Program highlights of A Century Ago: The Films of 1909 include: D.W. Griffith's landmark social film A Corner in Wheat, which also illustrates his continuing development of parallel editing; Vitagraph's "trick film" Princess Nicotine, using state-of-the-art visual effects of the time; Essanay's A Case of Seltzer, featuring cockeyed comic Ben Turpin; Pathé's Love's Surprise featuring France's sophisticated comedian Max Linder; Biograph's They Would Elope, with Mary Pickford in one of her earliest screen roles; and the newly-formed IMP Company's Hiawatha. Most prints will be 35mm and are drawn from the collections of the Academy Film Archive, the Library of Congress, George Eastman House and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Program approximately 2 hours.
