A Brighter Summer Day
By Edward Yang

Thu, Sep 16, 7 pm
Sun, Sep 19, 2 pm

Impossible to see until now, we present the long-awaited restoration of the uncut version of Edward Yang's masterful epic portrait of everyday life in 1960s Taiwan. During this time the country was undergoing massive changes after Japanese occupation, and looked toward an uncertain future. The story one boy’s struggle to grow up amidst the turbulence, the film explores family relations, youthful alienations, and obsessions with American culture. A dense and intense evocation of a particular time and place, this is one of the great achievements of late 20th-century cinema. Restoration by Cineteca del Comune di Bologna. (1991, 237 min with brief intermission, 35mm)
