Description
Nine years have passed since the opening of the Shooting Gallery and we simply cannot wait another year to celebrate! In these last nine years, Justin Giarla has developed galleries which are consistently on the frontline of contemporary urban art, with artists culled from our own beautiful city of San Francisco as well as from around the world. Our intent has always been to honor the hard earned reputations of the renowned artists we represent, and to promote the immense talent of artists fresh on the scene, with exhibits that are always free and open to the public. With a brand new year just barely under way, we’re excited to be organizing a schedule of incredible exhibits for Shooting Gallery, and also, of course, our sister galleries White Walls and 941Geary. 2012 will be a year of looking abroad, and between the three galleries we will showcase more than twelve international artists.Highlights of the next year include Sickboy (March, at WW’s), Niels Shoe Meulman (March, at 941Geary), Word to Mother (May, at WW’s), Herakut(May, at 941Geary), Can Love (June, at 941Geary), Meggs (July, at WW’s),RIPO (August, at WW’s), Ben Frost (September, at SG), and RONE(September, at White Walls). We are proud and honored to exhibit so many of the best contemporary urban artists of today, while providing them with the spaces they need to paint, not just within the galleries, but on the streets as well.
The friendship and patronage of all our supporters has been integral to the success of our artists and galleries, and for this we are incredibly thankful. We hope you all can join us for the exhibits planned throughout the year, most importantly our nine year anniversary on March 17th with London artistSickboy and bay area folk artist Jack Howe.
Mission Statement:
The Shooting Gallery opened its doors in 2003 to the edgy Tenderloin district of San Francisco; one known for its diverse culture and history. Owner and curator, Justin Giarla, founded the space to offer a welcoming environment for viewing the art he loves. Justin started collecting art at the age of 23 and has since amassed over 500 pieces in his own collection. Growing up in Southern California gave Justin an affinity with everything lowbrow: pop art, street art, outsider art, punk rock album art, comic book art, surf/skate art, erotic photography and hot rod culture. Giarla has long since recognized the necessity to provide lowbrow artists with a platform, which is exactly what The Shooting Gallery has done for the past nine years. In addition to the exhibition of leading shows in pop surrealism, figurative realism, and color abstraction, the Shooting Gallery also participates in art fairs around the world and hosts annual fundraisers for local nonprofits. Since opening The Shooting Gallery, Justin has gone on to start his own publishing company and open two more San Francisco galleries including White Walls and 941Geary. In 2012, Justin Giarla will expand the galleries into a new building he purchased this year, featuring a 5,000 sq ft state of the art gallery space.
