Description

Come to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on April 25 & 26, 2015 for a terrific rock, mineral, gem, lapidary, and jewelry show. The Civic is located at Center and Church streets, downtown Santa Cruz, CA. Doors are open from 10am to 5pm, and admission is just $5. Children under 12 and Scouts in uniform get in for free. Look for $1 off cards in local stores, in advertisements in local newspapers, at http://www.scmgs.com, or at http://www.facebook.com/santacruz.mineralandgemsociety.

The 2015 show will feature displays of outstanding rocks, minerals, fossils, jewelry, and associated lapidary arts, as well as lectures and activities for all ages.

New this year will be two lectures. On Saturday at 2 pm, Richard Hilton of Sierra College will discuss California dinosaurs. On Sunday at 2 pm, Rick Kennedy will present a talk about benitoite, the State Gem of California. Also new is a fascinating demonstration of hidden optical properties of rocks and minerals. Recurring events include door prizes, gold panning, a fluorescent mineral display, rock and mineral identification, geode cutting, sand and rock painting, and a treasure wheel trivia hunt that kids love. Wonderful rockhounding and lapidary treasures are the main event in the pick-your-prize raffle, as well as at the booths of 27 sellers of top-quality specimens and supplies.

The Society is an all-volunteer non-profit incorporated in 1949. SCMGS has hosted a yearly gem and mineral show since 1952. Funds from the show support the educational mission of SCMGS, specifically, to unite and associate those persons who are interested in the study and collecting of minerals and gemstones; for the mutual improvement in the art of cutting and polishing gem or semi-gem material; and, for increasing the knowledge of its members about the various earth sciences.
