Description

The 34th Annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, "The World United Through Dance," takes place June 2-July 1. Festival Artistic Directors Carlos Carvajal and CK Ladzekpo have curated a thrilling line-up featuring 30 veteran Bay Area dance companies performing both ancient and contemporary dances, including ground breaking cross-cultural collaborations and encore performances of some favorite dance pieces from past seasons.

The events of the third weekend of the Festival take place at the Novellus Theater, part of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Featuring dances from China, Cuba, Hawai’i, Hungary, India, Korea, Native America, Peru, Spain and Transylvania, the program takes place Saturday, June 16th, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, June 17th, at 3 p.m. The energetic weekend features a Marinera, a Peruvian courtship dance, by El Tunante; a Native American hoop dance by Sewam Dance; lightening fast spins by Chhandam Youth Dance Company; and flamenco from La Tania. Other dances include the hula kahiko style by Hālau o Keikiali’I; a contemporary piece with highly synchronized percussion from OngDance Company; a colorful dance by China Dance School and Theatre; dance celebrating the Roma from Collage Dance Ensemble and a yambú from Las Que Son Son.
