The Royal NoneSuch Gallery will host three artists this summer during ‘3 for 3: Three Summer Residencies at RNG’. Our July artist-in-residence is Veronica De Jesus who will be at the gallery from July 13th through August 3rd.

During her residency, Veronica will install large cut outs mounted on wooden stands. The cut outs are character studies from drawings of Batman, Jesus, and Muscle Men. These life-size self-standing cut outs will be arranged against a painted background to create a naturalistic diorama like setting. The figures of Batman, Jesus, and Muscle Men, represent no real narrative, just moments of fantasy and whimsy. This work explores what it means to be a strong person and what it means to lose track of identity, even in the midst of taking on roles. The work is about the artist’s constant search to define and redefine identity as an artist, teacher, person, and person in the world.

In conjunction with the residency there will be an artist’s talk in collaboration with Pam Martin and Lois Ann Barnett, a movie night with Vero Majano, and a closing party.

About the artist:
Veronica De Jesus was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in many American cities. After attending community colleges in the Sacramento area, she was accepted to the San Francisco Art Institute, where she graduated with honors in 1998. For three years following her graduation, De Jesus showed at the Jenn Joy Gallery in downtown San Francisco. While holding down three jobs, she learned how to read and write Braille. From 1999 to 2001, she taught arts and crafts to the blind community at the Lighthouse for the Blind in San Francisco. In 2001, De Jesus was accepted to the Master of Fine Arts program at UC Berkeley. The Department of Art Practice awarded her the Eisner Award twice, once for each year of the program. Upon graduating, De Jesus was granted a yearlong residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, California. She shows extensively in the San Francisco Bay. De Jesus is a member of the Sound Shack, a small group of artists dedicated to providing a space for dialogue through sound technology, journalism and visual art.
