The Royal NoneSuch Gallery will host three artists this summer during ‘3 for 3: Three Summer Residencies at RNG’. Our June artist-in-residence is George Pfau, whose multi-disciplinary practice contemplates the human body, the notion of zombies, and our cultural conversations about zombies. George will share his studio practice with the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4pm during the residency period, UCSF research scientist Dr. Bradley Boytek will present a guest lecture on the zombie brain, and the gallery will hold a closing party at the culmination of the first summer residency.
George Pfau is an artist working in a variety of media to investigate the notion of the zombie and the human body that is on the verge of recognition. Over the last year he created a project called "Zombies, identified" which takes the form of a slideshow lecture and has been performed at galleries, academic institutions, and other sites in California, New York, and Florida. A major portion of the lecture compares and contrasts the word zombie with the phrase “feverish, homeless, cannibal” which comes from the film Zombieland (2009). Currently, he is working to compare zombies with other artworks that depict the body in an influx state or contradictory position.
Dr. Bradley Voytek is an NIH-funded neuroscience researcher at UCSF making use of big data, mapping, and mathematics to figure out cognition. His presentation will discuss the inner workings of the human brain that has shifted into a zombie state. Based on research conducted with Dr. Timothy Verstynen, his talk uses images and film clips to present a vivid picture of the inner-workings of this state of being. Dr. Voytek has done presentations at the California Academy of Sciences, UC Berkeley, Google's TechTalks, TEDxBerkeley, and at ZomBcon. He is also a member of the Zombie Research Society.
About the Gallery
Royal NoneSuch Gallery is an artist-run alternative art and event space located in the Temescal district of Oakland, California. We are dedicated to creating community around art-based experiences that are thought provoking and conceptually rigorous, while also being accessible and fun. Through a framework of monthly exhibitions and related programs, we strive to maintain a dynamic schedule in which the gallery is continuously reinvented to reflect the spirit and process of an artist, specific program series, or collaboration. The Royal NoneSuch Gallery is not motivated by commercial interests, but instead by working with other artists and creators to facilitate experimentation and social engagement through monthly exhibitions and events. We encourage artists to translate their studio practice, not only into a month long installation, but into a social context that allows the public to actively connect with the central concepts and ideas of the exhibition through opportunities for participation. We take active responsibility for being part of an emerging art scene in Oakland by encouraging an atmosphere of creative risk taking from artists and participation from the community, aiming always for public experiences that are inclusive, innovative, and educational. Visitors to Royal NoneSuch can expect to see, hear, learn, experiment, and participate.
