25th annual Bioneers National Conference

The 25th annual Bioneers National Conference, bringing together academic, intellectual and scientific luminaries, today announced its schedule of activities and speakers for the event, Friday, Oct. 17 - Sunday, Oct. 19 at Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Marin Center Fairgrounds. http://www.bioneers.org/

Founded in 1990 by social entrepreneurs Kenny Ausubel and Nina Simons, the Bioneers summit annually attracts a broad spectrum of global thought-leaders who participate in panels, seminars and conduct interactive, networking activities for attendees.

Over the years, the Bioneers conference has developed a significant following because of the broad range of speakers that it presents. The event is highlighted by a free-flowing interaction among the experts and the audience.

The conference, which was held in Santa Fe, NM, before moving to San Francisco in 1997, has been a fixture in Marin County since 1999 and annually attracts more than 3000 participants.

This year’s featured speakers include: Eve Ensler (Vagina Monologues), Patricia Gualinga (Kichwa leader), Naomi Klein (journalist/author), Wallace J. Nichols (scientist), Paul Stamets (mycologist), Clayton Thomas-Muller (Cree Nation), Severine von Tscharner Fleming (The Greenhorns) and Terry Tempest Williams (writer).

Bioneers offers an annual scholarship program for underserved youth as well as ticket discounts for students, teachers and activists. In addition to regular conference activities, there will be pre- and post-conference intensive sessions on Thursday, Oct.16 and Monday, Oct. 20.

The Bioneers conference has been instrumental in the adoption of the ‘precautionary principle,’ which argues that until something is validated as safe for the environment, it should not be introduced into the environment.

Past conference attendees credit the event with having been remarkably prescient about the effects of political, societal and economic changes on the planet. During its first decade, Bioneers raised awareness about climate change. The second decade concentrated on efforts to stop it. More recently, the focus has turned to change and survive it.
