Description
Nuno Ramos’s 111 Vigília, Canto, Leitura (2016) commemorates the 1992 Carandiru Penitentiary massacre, one of the most severe human rights violations in modern Brazil that left 111 prisoners dead at the hands of military police. Conceived during a later resurgence of state-sanctioned violence in the country, Ramos’s vigil avoids the photographic sensationalism of dead bodies that dominated media coverage of the Carandiru tragedy. Instead, he honors the lives of the victims by staging a twenty-four-hour performance with artists, teachers, musicians, journalists, lawyers, and activists repeatedly stating the names of the deceased.This screening is presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Matter of Photography in the Americas.
The film will run for 24 hours straight from 2pm on Friday, April 27 to 2pm on Saturday, April 28. The exhibition and the auditorium will remain open during this time.
