2016 Left Coast Annual Opens at Sanchez Art Center

Sanchez Art Center is pleased to present the 2016 Left Coast Annual Juried Exhibition, on view from April 15 through May 22. Showing concurrently in the East Gallery is the 2015 LCA Awards Exhibition, featuring Lydia Rae Black and Lisa Hochstein, the award recipients chosen by 2015 juror Cathy Kimball, Executive Director and Chief Curator for San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.

The free opening reception is from 7 to 9 pm, Friday, April 15, with live music provided by the Jazz Cats featuring Don Rowell on guitar, Carl Herder playing bass, and Ishan Vest on drums. Come prepared to make some art of your own by participating in our Community Art Project, titled Coastal Colors. Your creations will be displayed in the East Gallery foyer throughout the Left Coast Annual.

The juror for Left Coast Annual this year was Lucía Sanromán, Director of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Art. Ms. Sanromán was challenged with selecting 46 artworks from the almost 900 works submitted by over 350 artists from California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The public is invited to the free Juror’s Talk and Awards Presentation on Sunday, May 22 at 3:30 pm to learn about the jurying process and to hear juror Lucía Sanromán dialogue with artists about their work.

The 2015 LCA Awards Exhibition features the lush oil paintings of Lydia Rae Black and the multilayered collage works of Lisa Hochstein. Black’s focus is the past laid bare in images of abandoned and disused buildings. In this show, which the artist titled Own, we see the parts of life we no longer use, and how much waste our culture produces. There is also a haunting beauty, as if the people who inhabited these spaces are still present, hovering in the air. Lisa Hochstein calls her show The Perfect City. Her collages range from intensively-labored works on wood panel, to juxtapositions of found objects that have been minimally altered. Hochstein’s work echoes a walk through the urban landscape, with references to graffiti, architecture, and the debris of daily life.

Other spring events include our EcoFest Community Art Activity in honor of Earth Day 2016. To take part, come on to Pacifica State Beach Saturday, April 23, between 11:30 and 3 pm. Then on Sunday, May 8, Sanchez Studio Artists will hold Open Studios. Over a dozen studios will be open to visitors from 1 to 5 pm, perfect timing to give mom a free art tour for Mother’s Day. If you’re an artist hankering to try your hand at the challenge of the 50|50 Show, the entry deadline will be May 10. Details coming soon on our website. And for young, upcoming artists, Summer Art Camps for Kids are now enrolling. Visit our website, http://www.SanchezArtCenter.org and click on the Classes page to register online.
