Description
2015 Left Coast Annual Opens at Sanchez Art CenterSanchez Art Center is pleased to present the 2015 Left Coast Annual Juried Exhibition, on view from April 10 through May 17. Showing concurrently in the East Gallery is the 2014 LCA Awards Exhibition, featuring Joni Marie Theodorsen and Anna Valdez, the award recipients chosen by 2014 juror Jenny Gheith of SFMOMA.
The free opening reception is from 7 to 9 pm, Friday, April 10, with live music provided by the wonderful vocal group Tonal Recall. Come prepared to make some art of your own at Family Art Night. Your creations will be displayed in Left on the Fence throughout the Left Coast Annual.
The juror for Left Coast Annual this year was Cathy Kimball, Executive Director and Chief Curator for the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. Kimball had the unenviable task of selecting 52 artworks from the almost 900 works submitted by 375 artists from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. The public is invited to the free Juror’s Talk and Awards Presentation on Sunday, April 12 at 3:30 pm to learn about the jurying process and to hear juror Cathy Kimball dialogue with artists about their work.
The 2014 LCA Awards Exhibition offers a study in contrasts. Joni Marie Theodorsen’s work may appear monochromatic and abstract to some, but her focus is on creating landscapes in different media, a project she’s been working on for 15 years. Her pieces convey a profound sense of place, of weather and environment. In contrast to Theodorsen’s work, the paintings of Anna Valdez are rich with color and pattern. Her domestic interiors feature personal and household objects from her own life and personal history, inviting viewers to reflect on the role and importance of everyday objects in the tapestry of their own lives.
Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd in Pacifica, 1.5 miles east of Highway 1. Following opening night, the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1–5 pm, and by appointment, through May 17. For more information call 650-355-1894 or visit sanchezartcenter.org.
