Description
When asked, "So, what can you make a camera out of?" Jo Babcock's answer, without hesitation is: "Anything." I've been watching him turn a basketball over and over...it might be the one object that stumps him in his quest to build 1,000 cameras while he is squirreled away in the recesses of RayKo Photo Center, building his secret cameras and weird inventions. I sometimes surprise him in the tool room making lenses and drilling strange canisters. "You think you're going to finish the project?"He holds a vintage suitcase that he's about to make into an operable camera, "Maybe. I'm at 821 cameras."
I nod and toss him a metal Band Aid tin...
Best known for his VW Van Camera and his book, "The Invented Camera" (Freedom Voices Press, 2005), Bay Area artist and educator, Jo Babcock was selected as RayKo Photo Center's Artist-in-Residence for the summer of 2010. New work from his extensive project "1,000 Cameras" can be seen at RayKo this fall. Meet the artist at the opening on September 16th...you might even get to help him finish that last camera!
