Description
Metal fans who are grindcore-curious would do well to check out Calgary's WAKE. In six years, WAKE have shared festival stages with the likes of Cattle Decapitation and Terrorizer, and toured with notable Relapse Records act Primitive Man. WAKE combine blast-beat drums, shredding guitars and an unrelenting pace with walls of droney guitar feedback, frequent tempo changes, and an occasional black metal shriek. Vocalist Kyle Ball's guttural commands are generally unintelligible, but when he screams, "Burn it all and watch it fall!" you get a sense of the general attitude behind the band. Especially when these ideas are crammed into breathless, 90-second bursts. (GS)
