Description
Instead of the usual black and teal at the Shark Tank, more than 250 ice skaters will hit the ice at HP Pavilion from Jan. 22-29 for the 2012 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championship.Ice skaters, including members of the 2011 U.S. World Team will compete at the novice, junior and senior levels. Twelve titles will be awarded in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dance categories.
Current U.S. Champions Alissa Czisny (ladies) and Meryl Davis & Charlie White (ice dancing) are set to compete, along with silver and bronze medalists Richard Dornbush and Ross Miner, respectively. Pairs champion John Coughlin will also take the ice with his new partner Caydee Denney.
The U.S. Figure Skating Championship, held annually since 1914, is one of the top skating events in the U.S. Organizers estimate an economic impact of up to $25 million dollars for the host city of the event, with more than 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials traveling to the city.
This year's event marks the second time San Jose has hosted the championship and the eleventh time it has been held in California. The last San Jose event was in 1996, when local sports figure Rudy Galindo thrilled those in attendance with a performance still regarded as one of the greatest and most memorable in the history of the championships, according to organizers.
Past winners including skating icons, such as Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano and Scott Hamilton.
