Description

Each year on the first Sunday in May, the Tor House Garden Party brings together admirers of the wild coast of Carmel, historic buildings, and of course, the poetry of Robinson Jeffers. Enjoy an afternoon (2 - 5 p.m.) of perusing the granite home and Irish-inspired tower that Jeffers built as he crafted his remarkable dramatic poems. As you walk the Tor House spring gardens, perched on the edge of Carmel Bay, you’ll be enchanted by musicians, plein air painters and knowledgeable docents who reveal fascinating details of America’s great poet, philosopher and environmentalist, as well as the remarkable life he shared with his wife and muse Una. Delightful homemade petite treats and refreshments are available in the garden and tea is served in the Jeffers’ dining room.

The Garden Party is also a special day for photographers as it is the only time you can take pictures inside Tor House for your personal memories. A climb to the top of Hawk Tower provides inspiring vistas of the pounding Pacific Ocean and the fabled beauty of Pt Lobos. Under the influence of this magical venue, perhaps a poem of your own will come to mind to capture the perfect moment forever. You’ll want to return soon for your own in-depth tour.

Admission to the event is $15 per person. Children must be over the age of twelve. Please, no pets of any age.

A raffle ($5 per ticket, 3 for $10) will offer lucky winners original art and photographs, including a Pt Lobos photograph by renowned Carmel photographer Kenneth Parker, dinners at restaurants including Fandango and Le Normandie, gift packages from local stores such as Carmel Bay Company and Miss Trawick's Garden, first edition books by Jeffers and many other wonderful items. This year you can choose to allot your tickets to specific prizes. Raffle ticket holders do not have to be present to win. All proceeds benefit the Tor House Foundation’s efforts to preserve and maintain Jeffers’ home and educate the public about his life and work.

ARTISTS
During the garden party, guests can watch plein-air artists Cindra Brinsmead, Rolf Lygren and Rhett Regina Owings create original works reflecting the beautiful gardens and buildings of Tor House. The paintings will be for sale after the event, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Tor House Foundation.

MUSIC
This year there will be several local musicians who will lace the air with tunes that Una Jeffers would surely have enjoyed. Mark Rush on solo Irish Flute and Irish Button Accordion; Spence Myers on the bagpipe; Liyanna Sadowski, a Carmel High sophomore, on harp; and the Serenade Music Duo with Laura Shaw on flute, guitar, and vocals and Sergey Lipovetsky on 10-string and 6-string guitars.
