I'm happy to report that Las Vegas' Thee Swank Bastards are way more swank than bastards. Like most surf bands, they're instrumental. But unlike most surf bands, they actually have a visual element, with statuesque performance artist and dancer Szandora occupying the space where a lead singer would be. Her work with a hula-hoop is pretty mesmerizing, but on another level she adds to the band's retro-exotica vibe. Reverb-drenched and heavy on the percussion, they have a modern edge, too, without ever blowing up into the full-blown wet psychedelia of a band like the Mermen. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
