Description
"...the most beautiful piece of choral music written in the 20th century!"Thus spoke Robert Shaw of A Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams. San Jose Symphonic Choir and soloists will join forces with Nova Vista Symphony to perform this magnificent piece November 28, 2009, almost 100 years after its premiere. Vaughan Williams was just 30 when he began work on the piece, one of the earliest symphonies in which a choir is used throughout as an integral part of the musical texture.
The composer brings the sea to life in the instruments of the orchestra and the voices of the chorus and soloists, giving us the majesty and grandeur, the mystery and the rhythms of the sea. But this is not a piece about the sea as such. Rather, the sea is a metaphor for the journeys of our lives, the voyages of our souls. The text is drawn from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass
