Description

The Romantic Generation

Charles Baudelaire defined Romanticism as “intimacy, spirituality, color, aspiration towards the infinite, expressed by every means available to the arts.” Truly, such depths of expression and high artistic ideals propelled the composers of Western music’s Romantic period. The enchanting melodies of Dvořák’sTerzetto, Hugo Wolf’s ebullient Italian Serenade, and the earnest pathos of Brahms’s Horn Trio create a rich panorama of the era’s musical offerings. The Fantasy Pieces and brilliant Piano Quintet of the quintessentially romantic Robert Schumann illustrate the composer’s notorious alter egos: Florestan and Eusebius, dual symbols of extroverted passion and serene introspection, who could well represent the dominant aesthetic of the entire nineteenth century.
