While listening to the Mess, the featured band this week at the Blank’s Wednesdays Live!, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the local five-piece—which blends bits of pop, rock and electronica to create hook-laden songs over a catchy beat—sounded eerily familiar. In fact, they sounded a lot like Novice, which plays the Venue on Friday. Almost too similar, you might say. With a little detective work, I discovered the reason why the San Jose–based Mess and the Hollister-based Novice sound so similar: they share two members, singer Mike Gross and drummer David Adametz.
