Description

SPECIAL EXHIBIT

The Art of Penjing at San Francisco's Conservatory of Flowers

Celebrate the Year of the Rat with a visit to the Conservatory of Flowers to see a rare display of Chinese penjing, elaborate miniature plant landscapes created on trays and in containers. You'll be amazed by the beauty and fine detailing of these living arrangements of stones, pruned trees and moss that evoke everything from idyllic, pagoda-studded river valleys to lush, tropical islands. Ten custom-created pieces show visitors extraordinary examples of all three main categories of scenery: tree penjing, landscape penjing and water-and-land penjing. This fascinating art dates back more than 2000 years and is the origin of Japan's bonsai tradition. Greatly influenced by the principles of Daoism and specifically the two opposing, but complementary forces of Yin and Yang, the scenes are a study in contrasts designed to capture the very essence and spirit of nature.
