Description
It has been centuries since the general public has perceived maritime piracy as a threat. However, after witnessing the dramatic naval rescue of the Maersk Alabama’s crew from Somali pirates earlier this year, piracy is back on the national security agenda. Join the Council for a panel discussion on maritime piracy that will examine why piracy has returned with such a vengeance, the reasons for its growth, and its effects on industry and global security. Is there a connection between maritime piracy and political terrorism or is it simply a case of brigands’ opportunism in weakened states that are conveniently located near oceanic chokepoints? The panel will also explore the strategic and economic implications of piracy and how best to combat it. How effective and practical are responses such as arming merchant ships and forming merchant convoys? Is the solution a military one or does it merely require greater international cooperation, diplomacy and developmental aid?More Info
