Student-Directed One-Act Play Festival at Foothill College

The Foothill College Theatre Conservatory presents "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow", seven short plays about life and death, March 21–24 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Evening performances are Thursday through Saturday, March 21–23, at 8 p.m. A matinee is set for Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m.

Foothill’s Theatre Conservatory is an intensive theatre-training program for serious students of college-age and older. “The one-act festival is a tradition at Foothill College,” said Foothill Theatre Arts Instructor Janis Bergmann, M.F.A. “It's the perfect vehicle for the theatre student who is learning the rigors and demands of producing for an audience. Each of the show's acts provides challenging, well-rounded roles for student-actors, as well as complete, well-structured plays for student-directors.”

Weaving evocative vignettes are Foothill student-directors Jacob Marker of Cupertino; Jeremy Griffith of Fremont; Michael Weiland, Julia Rotakhina and Erin Southard of San Jose; Taylor Sanders of San Mateo; and Pratiksha Shah of Sunnyvale.

About the plays:
• As if meeting the parents wasn’t awkward enough! In "Visiting Dad" by Judith Fein, before Laura can accept Mike’s proposal they must dig deep—about six feet—to get Dad’s blessing.
• "In St. Francis Preaches to the Birds" by David Ives, the humble priest offers two vultures food for thought, but his wisdom can be difficult to digest.
• On an emotional quest to find closure with her mother’s passing, Tricia encounters her mother’s long lost pianist protégé, Fitz. Together they search to make peace with their losses and find harmony in their existence, in "Dissonance" by Craig Pospisil.
• Details are important. Larry and Sheila are a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde who discover this the hard way, in "The Devil Is In the Details" by Jill Elaine Hughes.
• In "The Disruptive, Discursive Delusion of Donald" by Michael Roderick, Donald is awakened by two peculiar strangers who have the power to change his life forever, depending on the color of his socks.
• It’s midnight, it’s pouring rain and their daughter isn’t home yet, so Jay and Sue cope with the fateful moments before Carly returns…or not, in Lauren Feldmen’s "Asteroid Belt".
• In "The Mysteries of the Castle of the Monk of Falconara" by James Armstrong, three prominent novelists are summoned to an eerie castle in the Italian countryside on a stormy night. They soon discover that their mysterious hostess harbors a deadly secret that makes their blood run cold.
