Description

presents: FAMILY BLEND: THE BITTER AND THE SWEET

SUSAN ITO
> > "The Ice Cream Gene"
Does she knock or does she walk away? It's taken Susan twenty years to find the courage to set up this noon rendezvous at a Midwestern hotel in the midst of a blizzard. She could just walk away, just disappear into the snow. In fact, that might be the best idea. What if the woman on the other side of the door - her birth mother-- doesn't like her? Or vice versa? Susan has already risked so much to meet this woman. She's done things she'd never do again and certainly wouldn't recommend anyone else doing. Like impersonating a pregnant woman, lying to a doctor while her pants are down, begging her best friend for favors that put their relationship in jeopardy and nearly strangling a social worker. This has already cost Susan so much. It's two minutes until noon, and the seconds until her life changes are ticking away. Maybe she should just quit while she's ahead, and go find the nearest ice cream shop.

LISA MARIE ROLLINS
> > Ungrateful Daughter: One Black Girl's Story of Being Adopted into a White Family . . . that aren't Celebrities.
In a rush of electrifying story-telling, spoken word poetry and hilarious, unexpected characterizations, Lisa Marie reveals a sometimes disturbing picture of what it's like to attend an almost exclusively white, private school; expresses her fierce love for her conservative, Republican, Christian, organic farmer parents and addresses the new breed of well-meaning, white, liberal adoptive parents that strain her patience . . . repeatedly.

ZAHRA NOORBAKHSH
> > "Hijab and Hammerpants"
Zahra wears hijab - or at least tries it out, for 8 minutes at the local Blockbuster and against the wishes of her hijab-wearing mother, who would rather Zahra wear hammerpants. She wants Zahra to fit in with the "cool kids" at school and is convinced that a pair of banana yellow hammerpants, circa 1992 will do the trick!
