Description

The Music department at SJSU is holding a benefit concert for victims of the earthquake in Haiti, inspired by the story of Haitian violinist, Romel Joseph.

Joseph and his wife were in the music school he founded in Port-au-Prince in 1991 when the earthquake hit. After being trapped under rubble for 18 hours, he was taken to a hospital in Miami, where he is currently being treated for two broken legs and a broken hand.

A pianist and faculty member in SJSU's School of Music, Gwendolyn Mok heard about Joseph's story and wanted to help. A friend of Joseph's, Mok met him in the early '80s, when they were both fellows at the Tangelwood Music Festival. She began organizing a benefit concert to help pay for Joseph's medical costs and rebuild his school.

The concert will feature performances from the School of Music's faculty of classic Tchaikovsky and Brahms pieces, with original work from SJSU's resident Brian Belet. Admission is free, but the department asks that attendees bring their cell phones or check books to make donations. Fees for SJSU's South Garage will be waived.
