The connection between the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, sometimes referred to as “original Buddhism,” and Jodo Shinshu, or “True Pure Land” Buddhism, as taught by Shinran Shonin -- is often misunderstood. Some have argued the two streams of thought are entirely separate. Professor Ogawa clarifies this link: Jodo Shinshu clearly originates from Shakyamuni’s Buddha’s teaching of “pratitya samutpada,” or dependent co-arising.Shinran Shonin expressed this great truth through the teachings of the Pure Land and Amida Buddha, opening the gates of Buddhism to people from all walks of life, allowing them to find meaning in their lives regardless of livelihood or ability. Professor Ogawa has lectured widely and written many books on this subject, giving people a new appreciation for Jodo Shinshu. Co-presented by Higashi Honganji North America District.
