On Friday, October 24, Saul Williams and his live band take over the Shattuck Downlow, wielding creative chaos and discordant defiance as a sonic weapon. From Slam spoken word champion to actor to published author to musical enigma, Williams has traversed a vast scope of creative endeavors to arrive at his latest incarnation.The Shattuck Downlow show will herald the Berkeley arrival of Williams’ alter-ego, Niggy Tardust, an afrocentric revolutionary that delivers fiery wailing sermons over a Trent Reznor produced jarring and impenetrable Bombsquad-esque soundscape. Williams’ vocal wails and roaring rhymes brandish turmoil and rebellion and electrify his audience.
The New York Sun described the Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust as “the year's most politically agitated and musically sophisticated release.” Decked out in feathers, sporting body paint and a Mohawk, Williams’ high-intensity stage show is savage, eloquent and a force to be reckoned with.
