Description
M. Ryan Calo is a Residential Fellow at the Center for Internet and Society (CIS), a public interest technology law and policy program at Stanford Law School founded by Lawrence Lessig in 2000 and directed by eminent computer science and law scholar Barbara van Schewick. Part of the Law, Science, and Technology program at Stanford, CIS brings together scholars, legislators, students, security researchers, and others to study the interaction of new technologies and the law.Ryan will discuss his views on legal liability for harm caused by or with personal robots. Questions include whether robots will present novel challenges for the law and whether robot manufacturers should enjoy immunity from suit in some circumstances. Ryan suggests lawmakers look to Internet law for solutions, including Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act which immunizes websites for the conduct of their users.
