Description

Prong founder/lead-singer Tommy Victor never really considered Prong a metal band. Sure, metal was an influence, but so was punk, industrial and classic acid-rock. But in 1994, metalheads all over the country were regularly banging their heads to their songs "Broken Peace" and "Snap Your Finger, Snap Your Necks" thanks to some heavy rotation on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. Their mid-tempo heavy thrash beats, atonal melodies, syncopated rhythms and atmospheric experimentalism would help define the emerging alternative-metal genre, along with bands like Helmet and White Zombie. Prong leaned more towards industrial, however, than their contemporaries. They put out a couple successful albums, then broke up in 1996 after Epic dropped them. Victor quickly took his rock skills and toured and recorded with other metal acts like Danzig, Rob Zombie and Ministry. Victor has stated before that he never left the world of rock and roll because he had no other skills (citing his only prior work experience—soundman for CBGBs—as proof). Prong reformed in 2002 and have been releasing albums on Al Jougensen's relatively small indie label. Prong's recent output has been spotty, but their influence on modern metal is still obvious. Bands like Korn, Static X, Demon Hunter and even Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails have all cited Prong as an influence. - Aaron Carnes sanjose.com
