Oracle to Buy Sunby Eric Johnson on Apr 20, 2009Sun Microsystems this morning announced that it will be acquired by Oracle in a deal the San Jose Mercury News said is worth up to roughly $7.4 billion. The move comes three weeks after a sale of Sun to IBM fell apart. According to the Merc, in addition to creating a powerful combination of two giants, the deal could also mean big changes at Oracle—moving the business-software provider into the hardware business. "The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission-critical computing systems," said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison in a published statement, adding that the combination "enables [Oracle] to deliver complete and integrated computer systems, from database to disk.” "That array of technology and solutions will be unmatched by any other company," added Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz, who predicted the deal would create "a new leader across the entirety of the datacenter." by Eric Johnson on Apr 20, 2009 |
