In October 2007 artists and activists from the United States and Mexico met on both sides of the wall between Calexico and Mexicali to camp for five days and call into question the increased militarization of the border. Built off a movement founded in Europe, this was the first No Borders Camp to be held in North America and on two sides of an international border. The intention of the participants was to create an autonomous and unified encampment of peoples from multiple countries despite the physical, political, and mental barriers that divided them. Under continuous surveillance by border patrol agents for five days and nights, the campers organized and improvised workshops, conversations, direct actions, marches, memorials, murals, dances, and other experiments and experiences around, against, and atop the border fence as well as within local communities, maquilas, the port of entry, a detention center and a state cemetery where the bodies of unidentified migrants are buried. http://www.noborderscamp.org
