Description
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, 2011 Sundance hit Miss Representation uncovers the glaring reality of how women are portrayed in the media we have become so accustomed to. This examination of mainstream media exposes the "media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself," as well as the media's contribution to "the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America." The film disbands the collective message being sent to young women and men that "a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader."
