About

Everyone's favorite concentrated-liquid clothes remover is tequila, but what if there were another way to wake up feeling hungover and ashamed? Mezcal is similar to this well-known liquor but can come from various varieties of the agave cactus, unlike tequila, which only comes from the blue agave. Mezcal in San Jose boasts a good selection of its eponymous liquor, along with traditional Oaxacan food. Oaxacan native Adolfo Gomez owns the place, and his brother cooks the food, so the food and drink are authentic.

Lunch Menu -- Happy Hour Specials -- Patio Dining -- Banquet Service

Patio dining rain or shine! Since the patio has been covered with heaters and TVs, everyone seems to love dining al fresco at Mexcal.

The Southern Mexican State of Oaxaca produces cuisine known for its freshness due to its proximity to an abundance of resources: fruits and vegetables grown in Oaxaca’s central valley, tropical fruits in the North, and fish and shellfish from the Pacific Ocean on Oaxaca’s Southern shoreline.

For Banquets and Private Dining, Mezcal can have up to 120 people in their diningroom. Call owner Adolfo at 408.283.9595 for details and availability.

Family Owned and Operated - The way it should be!

While growing up in Oaxaca he always helped his mother and sisters in the kitchen. Cooking became his passion, but little did he know he’d be re-creating his mother and grandmother’s traditional Oaxacan dishes in his family’s San Jose restaurant. From Southern Mexico to Northern California nothing has changed – in Mezcal’s kitchen you will find Octavio working alongside his mother who has joined him from Oaxaca to help ensure all the spices, flavors and family recipes remain exactly the way they’ve been for generations. From the beautifully-plated food to the unique flavors served in each dish, Octavio takes great pride in learning from the best – his mother– and making his home-style cuisine for customers who are ready for a true Oaxacan experience.

Best New Restaurant

Even from the outside, you can tell the place is different. The brick exterior, metal work and indigenous Mexican motifs set the place apart from its neighbors. Inside, the heavy wooden furniture, Oaxacan art, original brick walls and beautiful bar make Mezcal one of the most distinctive dining rooms in San Jose. In spite of the upscale, urbane design, there's nothing fancy about the menu. This is Oaxacan food as you would find it in Oaxaca. It hasn't been watered down or gringofied.
