Recently listed in the 2009 Downbeat Critics Poll, Marcus Shelby’s orchestra will perform new music from their “MLK” jazz oratorio, an original composition inspired by the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Shelby will also talk about how blues, jazz, spirituals, and freedom songs were an important part of the the history of the Civil Rights movement. MSJO will also perform music from their recently commissioned “Calvin Jones Suite”, based on work by Chicago painter and muralist Calvin Jones, and select compositions by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.More Info
